Transactions and Proceedings of the New Zealand Institute
The Transactions and Proceedings of the New Zealand Institute are held on the 2nd floor of the Library, with other historical NZ periodicals. These heavy volumes, in their original bindings, have a certain charm. They are nice to dip into, but if you are looking for something specific you will probably prefer to go to the NZ Electronic Text Centre's website, where it is easy to search across the whole set of publications for a particular term or subject. All 88 volumes are available online.
From 1933, the New Zealand Institute was known as the Royal Society of New Zealand and the title of the publication changed accordingly. The Transactions published papers and contributions from researchers working in locations all over New Zealand. Articles cover a wide range of subjects and include ethnography, agriculture, history and literature, particularly in the early days of the publication. By the 1920s the Transactions were exclusively scientific, with particular focus on botany, zoology and geology.
If you would like to know more about the Royal Society's activities and publications, visit the Society's website.
